xfree86 (4.3.0-1) unstable; urgency=low * The rstartd.real file, previously in /etc/X11/rstart, has been moved to /usr/X11R6/bin. Because rstartd.real was previously what is known to the Debian package manager as a "conffile", it is possible that you have customized this file, with changes preserved by dpkg. This upgrade, however, will remove /etc/X11/rstart/rstartd.real regardless of whether or not you have changed it. In the unlikely event you have customized rstartd.real (which, as shipped, is a binary executable file), you will need to back it up before upgrading to this version of the xutils package. If you do not do so, your changes to rstartd.real will be lost. * Users of 102- or 105-key PC keyboards (as well as miniature and laptop keyboards compatible with these models) should ensure that their keyboard is configured accordingly in the XF86Config-4 file, using the "pc102" or "pc105" XkbModel instead of "pc101" or "pc104", respectively. If your keyboard has a "< >" key, you probably have a 102- or 105-key model. The "< >" key may not work if you do not configure your keyboard model correctly. You can use "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" to change this configuration parameter, or edit /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 directly. See the Debian X FAQ at or in the file /usr/share/doc/xfree86-common/FAQ.gz after this upgrade is complete for more information if you have problems with your keyboard. * GPM users only: those who use the the GPM repeater as the XFree86 X server's mouse device should note that the mouse driver in XFree86 4.3.0 has been rewritten in such a way that using any protocol other than "IntelliMouse" on the XFree86 side and "ms3" on the GPM side does not work well. If you have configured GPM as a repeater, are using it with the XFree86 X server, and are using anything other than "ms3" as the repeating protocol, you will likely want to change it to "ms3". If your XF86Config-4 file is automatically handled (see the news entry for xfree86 4.2.1-11) and uses /dev/gpmdata as the port for the configured mouse, the protocol will automatically be migrated to "IntelliMouse" if necessary. Otherwise, you will likely want to edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file after installing this package to change any configured input devices using the "mouse" driver and "/dev/gpmdata" as the "Device" option to set the "Protocol" option to "IntelliMouse". -- Branden Robinson Mon, 12 Apr 2004 01:47:32 -0500 xfree86 (4.2.1-11) unstable; urgency=medium * The following configuration files use a new, MD5-checksum-based method of management: - /etc/X11/X - /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 - /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config This new method attempts to detect changes to these files, and if they are modified by the user, the files will be ignored by the packaging system henceforth. The debconf region markers (e.g. "### BEGIN DEBCONF SECTION") formerly used in Xwrapper.config and XF86Config-4 are no longer used, are disregarded if present, and will not be newly written. The debconf templates in the xserver-common, xserver-xfree86, and xserver-xfree86-dbg packages (the latter shares all of its templates with xserver-xfree86) having to do with whether or not files on the disk should be overwritten have been removed, and are unregistered in the new packages' pre-installation scripts. In the event that you have customized these configuration files, and have neglected both to correct debconf's notion of whether it should manage those files, and (in the case of Xwrapper.config and XF86Config-4) have not removed the "debconf region markers" before upgrading to xfree86 4.2.1-10 or later, backups are made and stored in the same directory, with the suffix ".dpkg-old". See the Debian X FAQ at or in the file /usr/share/doc/xfree86-common/FAQ.gz after this upgrade is complete for more information on the Debian XFree86 packages' new method of handling these configuration files. -- Branden Robinson Sun, 24 Aug 2003 15:07:11 -0500 $Id: NEWS 1325 2004-04-28 08:41:01Z branden $ vim:set ai et sts=2 sw=2 tw=78:
